About the Film: Home of the Brave

This film tells the important story of Viola Liuzzo. She was a white housewife and a mother of five children. Viola felt strongly about the words of Martin Luther King Jr., a famous leader in the Civil Rights Movement. She decided to leave her home in Michigan to help out in Alabama in 1965.

Viola Liuzzo's Story

Viola Liuzzo volunteered with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. This was a group that worked for equal rights for all people. She helped during the historic Selma to Montgomery marches. These marches were a big part of the Civil Rights Movement. Sadly, while she was helping, Viola Liuzzo was killed by members of the Ku Klux Klan. This was a secret group that was against equal rights for Black people.

The film Home of the Brave shares her life story. It uses old videos and pictures. The actress Stockard Channing narrates the film. You will also hear many interviews with Viola Liuzzo's family members and people who knew her.
