What is Homegrown Music Festival?

The Homegrown Music Festival is one of New Zealand's biggest music events. It happens once a year, usually in March or April. The festival is held along the beautiful waterfront in Wellington, which is the capital city of New Zealand. It's a chance for people to see many different New Zealand bands and DJs all in one day.

Festival History and Growth

The festival began in 2008. Since then, it has grown a lot. Each year, more and more people want to go, and it often sells out! This means all the tickets are bought very quickly. The festival has become a popular tradition for music lovers in New Zealand.

Early Years: 2008 to 2010

The first Homegrown festival was on April 26, 2008. It had different stages for different types of music, like rock, indie, electronic, and dub & roots. Famous New Zealand bands like Shihad and The Mint Chicks played that year.

In 2009, the festival grew even bigger. It had five stages along the waterfront and featured 35 bands and DJs. The 2010 festival was called Vodafone Homegrown because of its sponsor, Vodafone. It continued to bring many popular New Zealand artists together.

Expanding Stages: 2011 and 2012

By 2011, the festival was called Jim Beam Homegrown due to a new sponsor. This year was special because it added a new stage just for pop and R&B music. This meant even more kinds of music were played, and more artists could perform.

The 2012 festival was held on February 18, 2012. It was the fifth year in a row that all 17,000 tickets sold out! This shows how popular the festival had become. Many well-known bands, like Shihad and Fat Freddy's Drop, played on the different stages.
