Discover the History of Homestead
Homestead has an interesting story behind its name. It wasn't always called Homestead!
Early Names and Changes
When the community first started, it was named Barford. Later, in 1908, its name was changed to Pederson. This new name honored the local postmaster at the time.
Why the Name Kept Changing
After a while, there was some confusion with the mail because of the name Pederson. So, the people living there decided to change the name again. They chose "Fort Peck."
However, the nearby town of Poplar didn't like this name. Poplar was the main office for the Fort Peck Indian Agency, which helps manage the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. To avoid confusion and problems, the residents of the community chose a new name one last time: Homestead.
