Early Days of Homestead
Homestead was first planned out as a community along a railroad line. This railroad was called the Choctaw Northern Railroad. Later, it became part of the larger Rock Island railroad system. The community was set up before Oklahoma officially became a state.
Post Office and Population
The Homestead Post Office opened its doors on January 26, 1893. This was an important step for the community. In 1905, a census of the Oklahoma Territory showed that about 150 people lived in Homestead.
Railroad and Changes
Railroads were very important for small towns like Homestead. They helped people and goods travel. However, Homestead lost its railroad service around 1926. This change likely affected the community's growth.
