The ten-dollar note is a special banknote used in Hong Kong. It's worth 10 Hong Kong dollars. Unlike most other banknotes in Hong Kong, which are issued by banks, the ten-dollar note is printed by the Hong Kong Government. This makes it quite unique!

The Hong Kong Ten-Dollar Note

The ten-dollar note has an interesting history. It has changed its look and who prints it over the years. Today, it's a purple note that helps people buy things every day in Hong Kong.

A Brief History of the Ten-Dollar Note

The very first ten-dollar notes appeared way back in 1868. They were first printed by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. At that time, Hong Kong was just starting to use its own money system.

For many years, different banks in Hong Kong printed their own ten-dollar notes. These notes were usually green. However, things changed in 1994 when a ten-dollar coin was introduced. All the old paper ten-dollar notes from the banks were slowly taken out of use.

Why the Ten-Dollar Note Changed

Even with the new coin, people in Hong Kong still really liked using the ten-dollar note. There was a high demand for it. Because of this, the Hong Kong Government decided to bring the banknote back.

In 2002, the government started printing new ten-dollar notes. This was a big deal because it was the first time the government had printed any banknotes since 1995. The ten-dollar note is still the only banknote in Hong Kong that comes directly from the government, not from a bank.

What Makes This Note Special?

The new ten-dollar notes are mostly purple. They also have a very important phrase printed on them: "Legal Tender in Hong Kong." This means the note is officially recognized as money that can be used for payments.

Other banknotes in Hong Kong, which are issued by banks, say something different. They say, "Promises to pay the bearer on demand at its Office here... By order of the Board of Directors." This shows that the bank promises to give you the value of the note if you bring it to them. The government's note is simply declared as money.

Like all modern money, the ten-dollar note has special features to prevent fake copies. These include things like a Watermark you can see when you hold it up to the light. It also has special printing that you can feel, called Intaglio printing. There are also hidden images and Security threads that are hard to copy.
