Hooker, South Dakota facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hooker is a small, undeveloped place in Turner County, South Dakota, in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.

History of Hooker

Hooker was started in 1894. It was named after John Hooker, who was one of the first people to settle in that area.

A post office served the community for many years, but it closed down in 1954.

Hooker was an important stop for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. This train line connected towns like Iroquois and Beresford. Because of the railroad, Hooker had a busy stockyard. This meant farmers could easily send their animals to big markets in Sioux City and Chicago to be sold.

In 1903, a powerful tornado hit Hooker. It caused a lot of damage, destroying much of the main part of the community.
