The Story of Hope Chapel
Hope Chapel was started by two amazing women, Lady Henrietta Hope and Lady Glenorchy, way back in 1784. They were visiting the natural hot spa resort in Hotwells, which was a popular place at the time. They noticed there wasn't a good place for worship nearby, especially since the only other church was up a very steep hill in Clifton.
Lady Hope gave a lot of money, £2,500, to help build the chapel. Lady Glenorchy agreed to make sure it got built. Sadly, both women passed away in 1786 before the chapel was finished. Lady Glenorchy's executor (the person who carried out her wishes) made sure their dream came true. The chapel was named "Hope Chapel" in honor of Lady Hope.
Over time, many people came to Hope Chapel. By 1851, about 600 to 700 people attended the morning service, and even more, 700 to 800, came in the evening!
Changes Over the Years
By the 1970s, fewer people were attending the church. By 1980, it was no longer used as a place of worship. For a while, it became a community center called the 'Hope Centre'. But then, in 2000, it reopened as Hope Community Church, continuing its original purpose.
Between 2006 and 2013, archaeologists from Bristol and Regional Archaeological Services (BaRAS) carefully watched over work being done in the chapel's crypt. The crypt is an underground room, and they were preparing it to be used as a public space.
What Hope Chapel Looks Like
The front of the chapel, facing south, has four sections called "bays." These bays are decorated with flat, column-like shapes called pilasters. Inside the main hall, there's a balcony that is held up by strong cast iron columns. You can also find special plaques and monuments inside that remember many people who were part of the church in the late 1700s and early 1800s.
