The Hope River is a cool river found in the Tasman District of New Zealand's South Island. It's special because it's the most northern of three rivers in the South Island that share the name "Hope River"!

Where the Hope River Flows

The Hope River begins high up on the eastern side of the Hope Range mountains. It starts at an elevation of about 1,200 meters (around 3,900 feet) above sea level.

From its source, the Hope River first flows towards the east. Then, it turns and heads south. Finally, it joins a bigger river called the Buller River. This meeting point is close to the Kawatiri Railway Station.

The Little Hope River

The Hope River has a smaller river that flows into it, called the Little Hope River. The Little Hope River starts near a place called the Hope Saddle. It flows southwest before joining the main Hope River at a spot known as Glenhope.

Traveling Along the River

A main road in New Zealand, State Highway 6 (State Highway 6), follows the valleys of both the Hope River and the Little Hope River. This road climbs up towards the Hope Saddle as it makes its way towards the city of Nelson.

How the Hope River Got Its Name

The Hope River was named after a person named G. W. Hope. He was the secretary to Edward, Lord Stanley. Lord Stanley was the 14th Earl of Derby, which is a very old and important title in Britain. He later became the Prime Minister of Great Britain, which is like being the leader of the country's government.
