Biography
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Horace Andy was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He recorded his very first song, "This is a Black Man's Country," in 1967. However, it wasn't until 1970 that he became well-known. He tried out for a record label called Studio One by himself and got signed.
The owner of Studio One, Coxsone Dodd, decided to call him Horace Andy. This was partly because another singer named Bob Andy was popular. It also helped avoid confusion with Horace's cousin, Justin Hinds, who was also a singer. His first song for Studio One was "Got To Be Sure."
Rising to Fame
Over the next few years, Horace Andy released many more songs. These included "See a Man's Face," "Night Owl," and "Fever." One of his most famous songs, "Skylarking," became a huge hit in Jamaica. It even reached the top of the music charts!
He continued to release popular songs like "Something on My Mind" and "Love of a Woman." In 1973, he had another number one hit in Jamaica with "Children of Israel." Horace Andy worked a lot with producer Bunny Lee in the 1970s. Together, they made many classic songs like a new version of "Skylarking," "You Are My Angel," and "Zion Gate."
Moving and New Sounds
In 1977, Horace Andy moved to Hartford, Connecticut, in the United States. There, he recorded the album In The Light. He also released singles like "Do You Love My Music" and "Government Land." He even started his own record label called Rhythm.
His 1978 album Pure Ranking showed a new style of reggae music called dancehall. Horace Andy was very important in helping this new sound grow. His 1982 album Dance Hall Style is now considered a classic album in reggae music. In 1985, he moved to London, England, and continued to record music there and in Jamaica.
Working with Massive Attack
In 1990, Horace Andy started working with a famous English music group called Massive Attack. This made him even more well-known around the world. He sang on all five of their albums. On their album Mezzanine, he sang on five songs, including a new version of "You Are My Angel," which they called "Angel." He also sang on their 2010 album Heligoland.
