Biography
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Horace Andy was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He recorded his first song, "This is a Black Man's Country," in 1967. But it wasn't until 1970 that he became well-known. He tried out for Coxsone Dodd's famous Studio One record label. Dodd decided Horace Hinds should use the name Horace Andy. This was partly because another singer named Bob Andy was popular.
His first song for Studio One was "Got To Be Sure." Over the next two years, he released more popular songs like "See a Man's Face" and "Fever." One of his most famous songs, "Skylarking," became a huge hit in Jamaica. It even reached number one on the music charts!
Horace Andy continued to release many hit songs in the 1970s. He worked with different music producers. His most successful partnership was with Bunny Lee. Together, they made classic songs like a new version of "Skylarking" and "You Are My Angel." In 1973, his song "Children of Israel" also hit number one in Jamaica.
Moving and New Sounds
In 1977, Horace Andy moved to Hartford, Connecticut, in the United States. There, he recorded the album In The Light. He also started his own record label called Rhythm. This label helped him release more of his music.
His 1978 album Pure Ranking helped start a new style of reggae music called dancehall. Horace Andy was a key artist in developing this sound. In 1985, he moved to London, England. He continued to record music there and also visited Jamaica often to work on new songs.
Working with Massive Attack
In 1990, Horace Andy started working with the group Massive Attack from Bristol, England. This made him even more famous. He has sung on all five of their albums, which is very special! Some of his most notable songs with them include "Angel" and "Splitting the Atom."
He also worked with other artists like Mad Professor in the 1990s. Horace Andy kept making new music, releasing albums like Living in the Flood in 1999 and Mek It Bun in 2002. He also appeared on the Easy Star All-Stars album Radiodread in 2006.
In 2022, Horace Andy released a new album called Midnight Rocker. It was produced by Adrian Sherwood. The album was very well-received by music critics.
