The Horace Webster Farmhouse is a very old and special house in Southington, Connecticut. It was built around 1837. This house is important because it's the only one left in town that shows the "Greek Revival" style with three main sections. In 1977, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as a historically important building.

What the Horace Webster Farmhouse Looks Like

The Horace Webster Farmhouse is in the southeastern part of Southington. You can find it on the east side of South End Road. It's just north of the Southington Country Club.

This house is two and a half stories tall. It's made of wood and has a pointed roof. The outside is covered with flat wooden boards called clapboards. The front of the house has three main sections. It has wide, flat columns on the corners. These columns go up to a decorative band and a triangular shape at the top. There's a cool oval window in the middle of this triangular part.

The main front door is on the right side. It has a small porch with a sloped roof. This porch is held up by round, fluted columns. The door itself has narrow windows on the sides and a window above it. These windows have a special leaded glass design. At the back of the main house, there's a two-story addition. Beyond that, there's a shed or garage. Inside, the house is simpler than the outside. It has a basic staircase and old cast iron fireplaces.

History of the Horace Webster Farmhouse

Horace Webster bought the land for this house in 1835. He was a relative of John Webster, an early governor of Connecticut. The land used to be farmland and included the area where the country club is now.

Horace Webster moved an older house off the property. That old house was taken down in 1975. He then built this new house, which was finished around 1837. Horace Webster ran a beef farm on the land. He also had a shoe shop. He moved away from the house in 1863. The house stayed in his family until 1922. Later, in the 1920s, the land for the golf course was rented out. Eventually, it was sold to become the Southington Country Club.
