Horacio Coppola (born July 31, 1906 – died June 18, 2012) was a famous Argentine photographer and filmmaker. He was known for capturing amazing pictures of cities, especially his hometown, Buenos Aires. He was also married to another talented photographer, Grete Stern.

Early Life and Photography

Horacio Coppola was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was the youngest of ten children. From a young age, he showed interest in art, music, and languages. He began taking photographs when he was around 20 years old.

Travels and New Photography Styles

In the 1920s and 1930s, Horacio traveled to Europe. This was an exciting time for photography! Artists were experimenting with new ways to take pictures. They used unusual angles and cropped photos to create cool effects.

While in Germany, he met Grete Stern, who would later become his wife. Later, in London, he took portraits of famous artists. He also worked on a book about ancient artifacts from places like the Louvre and the British Museum.

Capturing Buenos Aires

Horacio and Grete returned to Argentina in 1936. That year, Horacio was asked to photograph Buenos Aires for its 400th anniversary. He took many pictures of the city's streets. His photos showed the beauty, energy, and even the tough parts of this big city.

Family and Later Life

Horacio and Grete had two children, Silvia and Andres. They later divorced. In 1959, Horacio married Raquel Palomeque, who was a pianist.

Horacio Coppola was a very important photographer in Argentina. He was one of the first to use modern photography styles. He even studied at the famous Bauhaus art school in the 1930s. He took the pictures for the first edition of a book by the famous writer Jorge Luis Borges.

Horacio was named an "Illustrious Citizen of Buenos Aires" for his contributions. When he turned 100, a special exhibit of his work was held at the Malba Museum in Buenos Aires.
