The Horlick Malted Milk Company Industrial Complex is a group of old factory buildings in Racine, Wisconsin. This is where the famous Horlicks malted milk was made for many years. Four of these buildings are now listed as important historic places. These include the main factory buildings, which look a bit like a castle, built in 1882 and 1902. There's also an engine room from 1910 and a garage from 1916.

A Factory Like a Castle

The Horlicks factory complex once had fourteen buildings. Four of these are now on the National Register of Historic Places. The very first factory building was built in 1882. It was designed by James Corse & Sons. This building has three or four floors and looks like it's from the Gothic Revival style.

The building is made of light-colored brick, which was common in southeastern Wisconsin. It has a tall clock tower and small towers called turrets. Because of its unique look, people now call it "Clock Tower Place." An extra part was added to the north side of this building in 1910.

A second factory building was added in 1902. It was built in the same Gothic Revival style. A smaller, one-story part was added to it in 1951. In 1910, a two- or three-story engine room was built. This building had a very tall smokestack. It was connected to the main factories by a raised walkway. A two-story garage was also added to the complex in 1916.

What Happened Next?

Over the years, different companies bought parts of the Horlicks complex. In 1951, a company called Racine Hydraulics bought the main factory building. Later, in 1955, Western Publishing bought two other buildings. Western Publishing then sold these buildings to Racine Hydraulics in 1964.

Horlicks, which was then owned by the Beecham Group, kept making malted milk in the old engine room building until 1975.

In 2019, the current owners, J. Jeffers and Co., wanted to add the complex to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historic places in the United States. They had done this before with another building in Racine. The four main Horlicks buildings were first added to the Wisconsin State Register of Historic Places on November 22, 2019. Then, they were officially added to the National Register on February 24, 2020.
