The Horse Barn at Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah is a special old building. It was built in 1929. This was soon after the National Park Service started looking after the park. Before that, the U.S. Forest Service managed the land. The National Park Service wanted to make the park better for everyone. They designed this barn, and it's now a historic site. It shows how buildings were designed by the Park Service in the late 1920s.

What Does the Horse Barn Look Like?

The Horse Barn is about 18 feet wide and 21.5 feet long. It's made of wood and sits on a strong concrete base. The outside walls are covered with 12-inch wide wooden boards.

Doors and Windows

On the west side, there's a special entry door. It's made of vertical boards and has a small window. There's also a sliding window with four glass panes. Up higher, in the pointed part of the roof (called the gable), there's another small window.

The east side also has a sliding window with four panes. It also has a board-and-batten door. This door was likely used to load hay into the barn. The south side has two large board doors. These doors are next to sliding windows, each with four panes. There's also another entry door at the very end of the south side.

A New Purpose for the Barn

Even though it's called the Horse Barn, it's not used for horses anymore! The inside of the barn has been changed. It is now a mechanic's shop. It has two small rooms and one larger room. The small rooms have wooden walls. The bigger room has walls made of gypsum board.

Where Is It Now?

The barn is not in its original spot. It was moved to a new area. This area has other buildings from the National Park Service. It also has structures from the Utah Parks Company. These buildings were all moved to this spot starting in the 1950s. The barn's first location was near the Old National Park Service Housing Historic District.

Why Is the Horse Barn Special?

The Horse Barn is important because it shows the history of Bryce Canyon National Park. It's an example of the early work done by the National Park Service. They built structures that fit in with the natural beauty of the parks. This style is called "NPS Rustic."

Because of its history and design, the barn was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This happened on April 25, 1995. Being on this list means it's a place worth protecting for future generations.
