Park History and Its Special Name

The state bought the land for Horse Guard State Park in 1964. The park has stayed mostly natural since then. It was named after a very old group called the First Company Governor's Horse Guards. This group started way back in 1788! They are the oldest active mounted cavalry unit in the United States. A cavalry unit means soldiers who ride horses. So, the park's name honors this historic horse-riding group.

What Can You Do at Horse Guard State Park?

If you visit the park, you can go for a hike! There is a special trail that starts near the Avon Historical Society's Derrin House. You will see white markers along the path. The trail is about 1.5 miles long, going out and back. It leads to a rocky spot where you can see great views. From there, you can look out over the surrounding area to the south and west.
