Where is Horseshoe Lake?
Horseshoe Lake is located in the southern part of Crittenden County, Arkansas. It is only about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of the mighty Mississippi River. The town itself covers a small area of about 0.15 square miles (0.4 square kilometers) of land. It sits about 203 feet (62 meters) above sea level.
The Horseshoe Lake (Water Body)
The town gets its name from the actual Horseshoe Lake, which is a special type of lake called an oxbow lake. Imagine a river that bends and curves a lot. Sometimes, the river takes a shortcut, cutting off one of its big bends. When this happens, the old bend becomes a separate, U-shaped lake, like a horseshoe! That's how Horseshoe Lake was formed by the Mississippi River.
Today, Horseshoe Lake is a popular spot for fun summer activities. People from nearby Memphis and other places come here to go boating, swimming, and fishing. Oxbow lakes are quite common in the flat areas along the lower Mississippi River.
