Mirza Hossein Khan Sami'i (Persian: حسین سمیعی), also known as Adib al Saltaneh (Persian: ادیب السلطنه), was an important Iranian writer, poet, diplomat, and politician. He was born in 1876 and passed away on February 5, 1954. He held many different jobs in the Iranian government under both the Qajar dynasty and Pahlavi dynasty.

He first worked in the Foreign Ministry, which handles relations with other countries. Later, he became the head of the Office of Neighboring Governments. In 1910, he joined the Ministry of the Interior. From 1914 to 1918, he represented the city of Rasht in the National Consultative Assembly, which was like Iran's parliament.

Early Life and Education

Hossein ibn Hassan Sami'i Gilani was born in 1876 in Rasht, a city in Iran. His family was well-known and respected. He spent his childhood years in Tehran and Kermanshah. In Kermanshah, he studied important subjects like Arabic and other literary sciences.

He learned from famous teachers such as Abu al-Foqara' al-Isfahani and Mirza Salik al-Kermanshahi. Hossein Sami'i started writing poetry when he was only eleven years old. He used the pen name ‘Aṭā for his poems.

His Career in Government

In 1893, Hossein Sami'i returned to Tehran. He began working in the Foreign Ministry for the Qajar dynasty during the time of Muzaffar al-Din Shah. After the Persian Constitutional Revolution in 1907, he moved to the Ministry of Interior. This ministry is in charge of internal affairs within the country.

In 1914, he was chosen to be a representative for Rasht in the National Consultative Assembly. He worked in both the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of General Benefits. Later, he was appointed as the governor of Tehran, which is a very important position.

Contributions to Culture and Education

Beyond his political roles, Hossein Sami'i was also a dedicated writer and teacher. He wrote several books and taught political science. He was chosen to be the president of the Iranian Literary Academy, an important group that promotes literature. He also led the scout organization in Iran.

In 1935, when the First Academy of Sciences was created, he became one of its members. This shows his dedication to learning and knowledge.

Diplomatic Role

In 1940, Hossein Sami'i took on a new role as Iran's Ambassador to Afghanistan. An ambassador represents their country in another nation. He served in this important diplomatic role for almost two years. After his time as ambassador, he returned to lead the Academy once again.

Hossein Sami'i passed away on February 5, 1953. He was buried in the Ibn Babawayh Cemetery, which is located south of Tehran.
