Hostyle Gospel is a Christian hip hop group from Champaign, Illinois, in the United States. The main members are Demetrius Morton (known as King Soloman), Raynard Glass (Proverb), and Fontaine Pizza (Big Job). They are famous for their strong and energetic Christian rap music. The group even created their own unique sound called "Christian battle music." This style is also known as Christian war music or "The Hostyle Gospel sound."

Group History and Music

How Hostyle Gospel Started

Hostyle Gospel began in 2003. It grew out of an earlier group from central Illinois called Elite M.O.C. At first, the group only had two members: Raynard Glass and Demetrius Morton. Fontaine Pizza joined the band in 2005. The group also includes other people who help with making music, designing graphics, and managing their website.

Early Successes and Performances

In 2013, Hostyle Gospel worked with the Champaign School of Music. They hosted a "Family Rock Jam Session" for their local community. This was the first time a Christian hip hop group performed for an educational program in Champaign. After this successful event, the group made their first radio appearance. Their song Break was played on 97.9 Jamz WJWZ.

Later that year, Hostyle Gospel's album Desperation was featured in Gospel Synergy magazine. It was listed as new music to watch out for. On October 11, 2014, Hostyle Gospel performed at the Flavor Fest Urban Leadership Conference in Tampa, Florida. They shared the stage with other Christian rappers like KB (rapper), Da' T.R.U.T.H., and MC Jin. In 2015, Hostyle Gospel appeared on the TV show "Bobby Jones Presents." Bobby Jones interviewed the group. He talked about how Christian hip hop can help people connect with Jesus Christ.

Songs About Justice and New Albums

On April 19, 2016, Hostyle Gospel released a song called Skittles & Iced Tea. They worked with Christian rapper John Givez on this track. The song was about the Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman case. It talked about how important freedom, liberty, justice, and human rights are for everyone.

The group also teamed up with hip hop artist Gemstones. They released a single called "Clap" on June 8, 2016. On October 14, 2016, Hostyle Gospel released their fourth studio album, Hostyle Takeover. This album received great reviews. It featured artists like Gemstones, John Givez, and Fred Lynch. Tone Jonez produced the beats for the album.

In 2018, an article by Jesus Wired shared an interesting fact. Hostyle Gospel had originally wanted MC Jin for their song "Clap." But because MC Jin was busy, they decided to work with Gemstones instead.

Recent Music and Collaborations

Hostyle Gospel has released four studio albums and four mixtapes. They have worked with many well-known artists in the Christian music world. The group is also guided by Fred Lynch, a Christian hip hop legend from the group P.I.D..

On January 3, 2020, the group released a single called I Am Not The One. Jono Davies from Louder Than The Music gave the song a 5-star rating. He praised its "pulse-pounding rhythms" and "raw lyrics." He said it sparked a passion for God across America.

In late 2020, Hostyle Gospel worked with Reach Records rapper 1K Phew and indie rapper Joe Glass III. They released a song called "June 98." This song was inspired by the 1998 Chicago Bulls Championship team. It referenced Michael Jordan's famous quote from the ESPN film The Last Dance: “They can’t win unless we quit!” This quote celebrated the Bulls' second win against the Utah Jazz.
