A Look at Hot Spot's History

The area around Hot Spot has a long history, especially with its post office. From 1890 to 1914, a post office called Smoot Creek served the community. It was located near the Smoot Creek waterway.

As coal mining grew, the post office moved with the different coal camps. Its name changed several times. In 1918, it became Dalna. Then, in 1923, it was renamed Elsiecoal.

The name "Hot Spot" came about in 1932. It was named after the Hot Spot Coal Company, which was important to the area. People have often found the name "Hot Spot" to be quite unique.

Later, in 1942, the post office changed its name again to Premium. The Premium post office served the community for many years. However, it finally closed its doors in 2022.
