The Hotel Green was a famous hotel in Pasadena, California. It was built in 1893 by George Gill Green. Later, he added two more buildings in 1898 and 1903. This created a large group of three connected structures. The Hotel Green was once home to the Valley Hunt Club and the Tournament of Roses association.
The first building of the Hotel Green was designed by architect Frederick Roehrig in 1893. The second building was first called the "Central Annex." It is now known as "Castle Green." The third building is called the "North Annex." All these buildings together are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. They are also a special historic monument in Pasadena.

History of the Hotel Green
How the Hotel Green Was Built
Building a hotel started in 1887. A developer named Edward C. Webster began the project. It was located between Raymond Avenue and the Santa Fe Railroad tracks. Webster faced financial problems and could not finish the building.
George Gill Green then bought the unfinished hotel. He made it twice as big. The newly expanded hotel, named the Hotel Green, opened in 1894.
A Popular Place to Visit
The Hotel Green quickly became a very important place in Pasadena. It was a social and cultural center. Many important events happened there. These included parties for famous visitors and art shows.
Because the hotel was so popular, George Green decided to add more space. He started building an addition in 1897. The "Central Annex" opened on January 16, 1899. This was also Green's birthday. About 1,000 guests came to celebrate the opening.
Castle Green and More Additions
The new building became known as "Castle Green." It took up an entire city block. It was set back from the streets. This left plenty of room for a beautiful garden.
The hotel became even more popular with the new Central Annex. A special bridge connected it to the main hotel. This bridge went over Raymond Avenue. It became a great spot to watch the Rose Parade. The parade used to run along Raymond Avenue.
In 1903, Green added a third building. This building included an older structure from 1887. It was called the Wooster Block. This block was once part of the original site of the California Institute of Technology.
