Life Story of George G. Green
George Gill Green was born in Clarksboro, New Jersey. His parents were Mary Ann and Lewis M. Green. His mother was from Pennsylvania, and his father worked as a butcher.
Early Life and Military Service
George went to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. He studied there for two years. In 1864, he left school before finishing his degree.
He joined the United States Army during the American Civil War. He served from 1864 to 1865. He was part of the 142nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment.
Starting a Business Empire
In 1867, Green started a business in Baltimore. He sold medicines in large amounts. Sadly, his factory was destroyed in a fire. After this, he moved to Ohio.
There, he married Angie Brown. They had their first child in Ohio.
George bought the rights to two special medicines from his father. These were called "Green's August Flower" and "Dr. Boschee's German Syrup." His father used to sell them as "L.M. Green."
Smart Marketing and Success
George was very good at marketing. He sent out millions of free samples of his medicines. He also gave away thousands of his own almanacs. An almanac is a book published every year with facts and information.
These smart marketing ideas helped him become a very rich man. By 1880, he was a millionaire.
Building and Investing
In 1880, George built the Woodbury Opera House in Woodbury, New Jersey. His family moved to Woodbury on November 23, 1872.
George and Angie had another son, George Gill Green II. He was born on January 17, 1883.
In 1893, Green bought a hotel that wasn't finished yet. It was in Pasadena, California. He completed it in 1894 and opened it as the famous Hotel Green.
In 1895, he finished building a summer home. It was called Kil Kare Castle. This beautiful home was located at Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey.
Three years later, in 1898, Green added more to the Hotel Green. He built an annex, which is an extra building. This new part was called the Central Annex building, or Castle Green. It is a very important historical building. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and other historical lists.
In 1903, Green added a third annex to the Hotel Green. This one was known as the Wooster Block.
Later Years
George Green's medicine business started to slow down. This happened after a new law was passed in 1906. It was called the Pure Food and Drug Act. This law made sure that medicines had to be safe and correctly labeled. By 1916, his company stopped making its products.
George Gill Green passed away on February 26, 1925. He died in Woodbury, New Jersey.
