History of the Tallcorn
Building a Landmark
The Eppley Hotel Company built the Hotel Tallcorn. It cost about $500,000 to build. Local people in Marshalltown helped out too. They gave $120,000 to make sure the hotel could be finished. This shows how much the community wanted this new building.
A Big Hotel Sale
In 1956, something big happened. The Eppley chain sold the Hotel Tallcorn to the Sheraton Corporation. This sale was part of one of the largest hotel sales in the history of the United States! It was a huge deal for the hotel business back then.
A Recognized Historic Place
The Tallcorn is very important to the history of Marshalltown. In 2002, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as a special historic building. It is also a "contributing property" to the Marshalltown Downtown Historic District. This means it helps make the whole downtown area a historic place.
