A Look Back: History of the House of Bodleigh
Millers Point is one of the very first places in Australia where European settlers built homes. It has always been a busy area for ships and port activities. The House of Bodleigh was built around the year 1900. It was constructed on an empty piece of land between rows of houses that were built much earlier, in the 1860s.
What Does It Look Like?
The House of Bodleigh is a two-storey building made of brick. It was built in the Federation style, which was popular around the time it was built.
- Outside: The building has an arched entrance, which means the top of the doorway is curved. Above the lower door and windows, you can see special fan-shaped windows called fanlights. The roof hides a triangular part called a pediment, which is often seen in older buildings. The walls are made of brick and stone, and the roof is made of corrugated galvanised iron. The outside of the building is in good condition.
- Inside: Some parts of the original inside might be hidden by newer additions. However, there is interesting old woodwork inside.
Changes Over Time
The building has had some changes since it was first built.
- Outside changes: The bricks on the top floor have been painted. Some of the windows have also been changed.
- Inside changes: It's possible that some important original interior features are now covered up.
