The House of La Trémoille was an important French family. They got their name from a small village in western France called La Trimouille. This family is connected to the Princely Family of Ligne. The La Trémoille family has been around since the mid-1000s. Since the 1300s, its members have played a big role in French history.

The main part of the family were first known as the Viscounts of Thouars. A "Viscount" was a noble title, a bit like a count. Later, in 1563, they became "Dukes" of Thouars, which was an even higher noble title. They also used the titles Prince of Talmont and Prince of Tarente. While they were also called Dukes of La Trémoille, they were more often known as the Dukes of Thouars.
