Viscount facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

A Viscount is a special title for a person who is part of the European nobility. Think of it like a rank, similar to how people have different ranks in a club or a team. A viscount is usually ranked higher than a baron but lower than a count. If a woman holds this title, she is called a Viscountess. The word comes from the French vicomte and the Latin vicecomes, which means "deputy of a count".

History of Viscounts

Viscounts in Early Europe

Long ago, starting in the early 800s, the Carolingian kings in Europe appointed important people called counts to manage local areas. These counts often needed help, so they chose assistants called viscounts.

Viscounts acted as deputies, meaning they helped the counts with many tasks. They were in charge of military matters, collecting money, managing the government, and even holding their own courts to settle disagreements. They also made sure the king's orders were followed. Over time, viscounts started getting regular salaries for their work.

In the 900s, some viscounts in southern France began to take more power for themselves. They started acting like counts, especially in places like Narbonne and Nimes. In other parts of France, viscounts gradually took over the roles of counts whenever they could. The area or job of a viscount was called a Viscounty or Viscountship.

By the 1000s, the title of viscount became something that was passed down through families in most of Western Europe. This meant that if your father was a viscount, you would likely become one too.

Before 1066, in Normandy, Duke William I (who later became King of England) saw the viscount position as very important. After he conquered England, he made some of his viscounts from Normandy into earls in England. An English earl was similar in rank to a count in Europe. However, William did not create any new viscount titles in England at that time.

In Italy during the 1000s, the title and lands of a viscount also became something that families owned and passed down. Like the titles of count or marquis, all family members might use the title.

Viscounts in England

The title of viscount first appeared in England in the 1400s. The very first person to be recognized as a viscount in England was John Beaumont. He was already a viscount in a place called Maine. This new English title was given to him to make him rank higher than the barons in the English system of nobility.

After John Beaumont, the viscount title became a regular rank in the English nobility. In England, and later in the United Kingdom, a viscount ranks above a baron but below an earl. The wife of a viscount is called a Viscountess.
