A Look at Houston's History
The community of Houston got its name from a local minister, Reverend H. W. Houston. He was an important person in the area.
Becoming a Village
In 1840, the government of Georgia, called the Georgia General Assembly, officially made Houston a village. This meant it had a special document, called a "charter," that gave it the rights and rules of a town. It was known as the Village of Houston.
No Longer a Village
However, in 1995, the village's charter was officially ended. This means Houston stopped being an official village with its own government. Today, it remains an unincorporated community within Heard County.
