Hoved Island is a small, uninhabited island located in the far north of Canada. It is part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region within the Canadian territory of Nunavut. This island is found in the cold, icy waters of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

Location and Geography

Hoved Island is situated in a very remote part of the world. It lies between two land areas called the Svendsen Peninsula and the Bjorne Peninsula. The island is also found inside Baumann Fiord, which is a long, narrow inlet of the sea.

This fiord is part of Ellesmere Island, one of the largest islands in Canada. Ellesmere Island is a key part of the Queen Elizabeth Islands group. Hoved Island itself covers an area of about 158 square kilometers (61 square miles).

History and Naming

Hoved Island was first explored and mapped by a Norwegian expedition. This journey took place between 1898 and 1902. It was led by Captain Otto Sverdrup on his ship, the Fram.

Captain Sverdrup and his crew were the first to chart this island. They also gave it its name. The word Hoved means "main" in Norwegian.
