He is best known for the many plays and musicals he wrote with his partner, Russel Crouse. He also famously acted in the long-running play Life with Father with his wife, Dorothy Stickney. Early Life and Acting Career

Howard Lindsay finished school at Boston Latin School in 1907. Before he became a famous writer, he worked as an actor and director. One of his most famous acting roles was playing "Father" in the Broadway play Life with Father in 1939. He acted in this play for a very long time.

Working with Russel Crouse

Howard Lindsay often worked with his writing partner, Russel Crouse. They were known together as Lindsay and Crouse. They wrote many successful plays and musicals.

  • Winning the Pulitzer Prize: In 1945, Lindsay and Crouse won the important Pulitzer Prize for Drama for their play State of the Union. This play was later made into a movie in 1948 by director Frank Capra.
  • Writing for Musicals: They also wrote the story, or "book," for the famous musical The Sound of Music. For this work, they won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1960.
  • Other Musicals: Lindsay and Crouse also wrote other popular musicals like Call Me Madam, Happy Hunting, and Mr. President.

  • Radio Host: On October 5, 1947, he became the host, or master of ceremonies, for the Ford Theatre radio show.
