Stanton is a small, historic community located within Readington Township in Hunterdon County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It is an unincorporated community, meaning it is part of a larger township and does not have its own separate local government. The community's history goes back to the 1600s, when Dutch immigrants first settled the area.

History of Stanton's Name

Stanton has had several names over the years. It was first called Housel's in the mid-1700s. This name came from Johannes Housel, who owned a farm along Dreahook Road. After William Housel, who started a school in the community, passed away, the area was renamed Waggoner's Hill. This new name honored William Waggoner, another landowner.

In the early 1900s, the community became known as Mount Pleasant. However, to avoid confusion with another place called Mount Pleasant, the name was changed to Stanton. The name "Stanton" comes from a Pennsylvania estate called Stenton. This estate belonged to James Logan, an important figure in early American history. Logan was a proprietor of West Jersey, which means he owned a lot of land there. He also served as a mayor of Philadelphia and a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. Several places are named after him, including Logan Way in Readington.

In the 1830s, a Reformed Church and a general store were built in Stanton. The Stanton Reformed Church is still standing today. The old Stanton General Store has been changed into an Italian restaurant called the Stanton Italian Table.
