Howardsville is a small community in the southwestern part of Loudoun County, Virginia. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a town or city. Instead, it's part of the larger county. You can find it at these coordinates: 39°2′16″N 77°50′19″W / 39.03778°N 77.83861°W / 39.03778; -77.83861.

Howardsville: A Community's Beginning

Howardsville has a special history. It was founded in 1874, just nine years after slavery ended in the United States. Two men, Jacob Howard and Andrew Causeberry, bought four acres of land. This land was in western Loudoun County, near Upperville.

Building a New Life

The land Jacob and Andrew bought was once part of a large farm. This farm belonged to William and Mary Stephenson, who had enslaved Jacob. After gaining their freedom, Jacob and Andrew started a new life. Other people soon followed them to this area.

Jacob and his wife, Sophia, built a home there. They raised their family and created a new community. Their children and grandchildren still own property in Howardsville today.

A Lasting Legacy

Howardsville is important because it is one of the few African American communities in Loudoun County that still exists today. These communities were formed by formerly enslaved people after the Civil War. They represent a strong history of freedom and community building.
