A Look at Hoyos's Past
Hoyos was once part of a very important family's land. This family was known as the Dukedom of Alba. The First Duke of Alba, named Don García Álvarez de Toledo, took control of the city of Coria. Along with Coria, he also gained control of nearby villages like Acebo, Hoyos, and Perales. This happened a long time ago, making Hoyos part of a powerful noble family's history.
The Church of Saint Lawrence
Hoyos has a small church dedicated to its special saint, St. Lorenzo. St. Lorenzo is also known as Saint Lawrence. During a special week called Semana Santa, which means "Holy Week", people in Hoyos have a tradition. At night, they carry a statue of the Virgin Mary through the streets of the town. This is a very old and important tradition for the community.
What Hoyos Makes and Sells
Hoyos is known for a few important products. It is home to the main office for "Gata Hurdes" olive oil. This means the rules for making this special olive oil are decided here. Hoyos is also famous for its delicious serrano ham. This is a type of cured ham that many people enjoy. The town also grows a special kind of olive called "Manzanilla Cacereña." These olives are used to make the local olive oil.
Exploring Hoyos: A Tourist Spot
Hoyos is like a hidden treasure in Spain. It is in an area that not many tourists know about yet. The province of Cáceres, where Hoyos is located, became famous recently. Parts of the popular TV show Game of Thrones were filmed there!
Hoyos itself has interesting old buildings. There is a church built in the Romanesque style, which is a very old way of building. The town also has many houses made of stone. In recent years, more people have started visiting Hoyos. This is because new, cozy hotels, called rural hotels, have opened up. One example is Jardin de la Sierra de Gata. These places help visitors enjoy the quiet beauty of the area.
