Who Was Hoàng Hoa Thám?
Hoàng Hoa Thám was born with the name Đoàn Văn Nghĩa. This was in a place called Tiên Lữ, in Hưng Yên province. Later, he used the name Hoàng Hoa Thám. His fighting name, or nom-de-guerre, was Đề Thám. "Đề" was a short way of saying "Đề đốc," which means commander. He used this title because the official government never gave him a military rank.
His Family's Story
Hoàng Hoa Thám's parents joined a group fighting against the government. They both died in the mountains. To stay safe and hidden, his uncle moved to the Yên Thế area. The family changed their last name from Trương to Hoàng. This is how Đoàn Văn Nghĩa became Hoàng Hoa Thám.
Fighting the French
The French were taking control of Tonkin, a part of Vietnam. In the early 1890s, French troops led by Joseph Gallieni attacked Yên Thế. They defeated many of the local fighters.
However, Đề Thám fought back. He attacked the railway, taking trains and supplies. He even captured a local official for ransom. The French authorities decided to make peace with him. They gave Đề Thám control over a small area.
This made him a symbol of hope for other groups fighting the French. The French tried to take back his land in later military attacks. But Đề Thám's brave actions made him very famous. He continued to challenge the French for many years in the early 1900s.
How Did Hoàng Hoa Thám Die?
Đề Thám was killed in Thái Nguyên on February 10, 1913. Some sources say it was March 18, 1913. He was assassinated by one of his own men, named Lương Tam Kỳ. This man was secretly working for the French. He had been a commander in the Black Flag Army before.
Hoàng Hoa Thám's Legacy
Hoàng Hoa Thám is seen as a national hero in Vietnam. Many streets and buildings are named after him. For example, there was an important military operation during the Vietnam War called Operation Hoàng Hoa Thám.
