Hu Qiheng (born in 1934) is a very important Chinese computer scientist. She played a huge role in bringing the internet to China. From 1987 to 1996, she was a top leader at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. During this time, she helped set up the system that connected China to the internet for the very first time in April 1994. Because of her work, Hu Qiheng was added to the Internet Hall of Fame in 2013. This special award recognizes people who have made the internet better for everyone around the world.

Early Life and Education
Hu Qiheng was born in 1934 in Beijing, China. Her family's original home was in Yulin, Shaanxi. She went to college at the Moscow Institute of Chemical Machinery. In 1963, she earned a degree in healthcare from there.
Career Highlights
Hu Qiheng started her important work in the 1980s. From 1983 to 1987, she was the director of the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. This role meant she was in charge of a big research center.
Bringing the Internet to China
In 1987, Hu Qiheng became the secretary general of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The next year, in 1988, she became the academy's vice president. She held this important job until 1996. While she was vice president, Hu Qiheng was in charge of the National Computing and Networking Facility of China. This was the group responsible for connecting China to the internet.
She worked hard to convince the National Science Foundation to allow China to join the internet. Her talks with officials led to a big agreement. This agreement finally allowed the first internet connection, called a TCP/IP connection, to be set up in China on April 20, 1994. This was a huge step for China!
After the Internet Connection
After her time as vice president ended in 1996, Hu Qiheng continued to work on internet development. In 1997, she started the China Internet Network Information Center. This center helps manage internet names and numbers in China.
In 2001, she also helped create the Internet Society of China. As the president of this society, Hu Qiheng strongly supported bringing the internet to more remote areas of China. In 2004, the United Nations asked her to be a member of their Working Group on Internet Governance. This group helps decide how the internet should be managed globally.
Pioneer in Technology
Hu Qiheng is also known for being one of the first people to work on mode identification and artificial intelligence (AI) in China. AI is about making computers think and learn like humans. She helped create the Knowledge and Intelligence Science Laboratory. She also led important groups like the China Automation Society and the China Computer Society.
Awards and Recognition
In 2013, Hu Qiheng was honored for her amazing work. She was added to the Internet Hall of Fame as a "global connector." This means she helped connect the world through the internet.
Personal Life
Hu Qiheng is married and has two children. Her brother, Hu Qili, was also a very important person in China's government. He held high-ranking positions from 1985 to 1989.
