Hu Qiheng (born in 1934) is a famous Chinese computer scientist. She played a huge role in connecting China to the internet. From 1987 to 1996, she was the vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. She also led the team that brought the internet to China in April 1994. Because of her important work, Hu Qiheng was added to the Internet Hall of Fame in 2013. She is known as a "global connector" for her efforts.

Early Life and Education
Hu Qiheng was born in 1934 in Beijing, China. Her family's original home was in Yulin, Shaanxi. She studied at the Moscow Institute of Chemical Machinery. In 1963, she earned a degree in healthcare from there.
Hu Qiheng's Career
Hu Qiheng started her important work in the 1980s. From 1983 to 1987, she was the director of the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Connecting China to the Internet
In 1987, she became the secretary general of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The next year, in 1988, she became the academy's vice president. She held this big job until 1996. During this time, Hu Qiheng was in charge of the National Computing and Networking Facility of China. She worked hard to convince the National Science Foundation to let China connect to the internet. Her talks with officials led to a big agreement. This agreement allowed China to get its very first internet connection on April 20, 1994. This was a huge step for China!
After the Academy
After her time as vice president ended in 1996, Hu Qiheng kept working to improve the internet in China. In 1997, she started the China Internet Network Information Center. Then, in 2001, she helped create the Internet Society of China. As the president of this society, she pushed for the internet to reach even the faraway parts of China. In 2004, the United Nations asked her to join a special group. This group was called the Working Group on Internet Governance.
Contributions to AI
Hu Qiheng is also a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in China. She helped set up the Knowledge and Intelligence Science Laboratory. She also served as president of the China Automation Society. And she was president of the China Computer Society.
Awards and Recognition
In 2013, Hu Qiheng was honored for her amazing work. She was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame. This award recognized her as a "global connector" for her efforts in bringing the internet to China.
Personal Life
Hu Qiheng is married and has two children. Her brother, Hu Qili, was also a very important person in China. He held high positions in the Chinese Communist Party in the 1980s.
