Hu Ronghua's Amazing Xiangqi Career
Becoming a Champion
Hu Ronghua first won the Chinese National Xiangqi Championship in 1960. He was only 15 years old, making him the youngest champion ever! This was a huge achievement.
A Winning Streak
After his first win, Hu Ronghua kept winning! He won the next nine national championships in a row. This means he had an incredible 10-championship streak that lasted from 1960 to 1979. There were some years when the competition wasn't held because of a period called the Cultural Revolution in China.
Still Winning in Later Years
Many people thought that by the mid-1990s, Hu Ronghua might not win as much. They believed younger players would take his place. But Hu Ronghua proved them wrong! He won the national championship again in 1997 and then once more in 2000.
Breaking Records
Hu Ronghua holds many records in xiangqi history. He has won the most national xiangqi titles, with a total of 14 wins. He is also the youngest champion ever (at age 15 in 1960) and the oldest champion ever (at age 55 in 2000). What an amazing career!
How Hu Ronghua Helped Xiangqi Grow
New Ideas for the Game
Hu Ronghua has always wanted to make xiangqi even more popular. He has created new strategies for the game, like the "Fly-Elephant" opening and the "Counter-Palace-Knight" opening. These are special ways to start a game that can give players an advantage.
The "Hu Rule"
He even came up with a new rule for xiangqi, called the "Hu Rule." This rule was designed to make games more exciting and prevent too many draws (when a game ends with no winner). With the "Hu Rule," players would bid for the chance to play as the black pieces. The player who offered less time would win the bid. If the game ended in a draw, the player playing black would win. However, other professional players did not like this rule, and it was stopped after one year.
Xiangqi and Technology
In 2022, Hu Ronghua even gave live commentary at a big event. This event showed how advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be used in xiangqi. It's cool to see how he connects the traditional game with new technology!
Other Hobbies
Besides xiangqi, Hu Ronghua also learned a bit of weiqi, which is another ancient Chinese board game, similar to Go. He also enjoys playing a local game from Shanghai called daguailuzi.
