The Huaconada ritual dance

Huaconada is a special dance from the village of Mito in the central Peruvian Andes mountains. This village is in the Concepción area. The dance is a very old tradition. In 2010, UNESCO recognized Huaconada. It was added to the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This means it is a very important cultural practice that should be protected.

What is the Huaconada Dance?

The Huaconada dance happens every year. It takes place on the first three days of January. Masked men called "huacones" perform the dance. They do a series of planned movements. The dancing happens right in the middle of the village.

The Huacones and Their Masks

There are two main kinds of "huacones." Each type wears different costumes and masks.

  • One type wears traditional outfits. Their masks are carefully carved. These masks are meant to show respect and sometimes a little fear.
  • The other type wears more modern costumes. Their masks show different feelings. They might look scary, sad, or even funny.

Music for the Dance

The dancers move to the beat of a small drum. This drum is called a "tinya." It is a traditional drum from the local people. The tinya helps keep the rhythm for the dancers.

Passing on the Tradition

The Huaconada dance is a family tradition. It is passed down from fathers to their sons. But not just anyone can be a "huacone." Only men who are known for being good and honest are allowed to perform this special ritual dance.
