Huari or Wari is an amazing ancient city in Peru. It was once the capital of the powerful Wari Empire. This important archaeological site is located near the town of Quinua. It sits high up in the mountains, between 2600 and 2900 meters above sea level. Huari was one of the biggest cities in ancient Peru.
The History of Huari
The city of Huari was founded around the year 400 AD. It became very important about 150 years later, around 550 AD. At its busiest time, about 70,000 people lived there. These people came from many different cultures.
Huari became the center of a new religion. This religion combined the beliefs of all the different groups living in the city. The city was used for about 600 years. People stopped living in Huari around the year 1000 AD.
Exploring the City Layout
The ancient city of Huari covers a huge area. It spans about 2000 hectares, which is like 2000 football fields! The site is divided into several different areas or neighborhoods.
The buildings in Huari were made from stone and mudbrick. Many of them were painted in bright red and white colors. These structures had different purposes. Some were homes where people lived. Others were used for managing the city or for religious ceremonies.
