Discovering Hub, Mississippi
Where is Hub?
Hub is located in Marion County, Mississippi. To the south of Hub, you'll find the Lower Little Creek. This creek is a smaller stream that flows into the Pearl River. The Pearl River is a major river in Mississippi and Louisiana.
Hub's Early Days
Hub was never officially made into a town. It had its own post office for many years. This post office operated from 1899 until 1954.
In the 1880s, a special logging railroad was built here. It was created by Camp & Hinton Brothers. This railroad started in Hub and went several miles south. Later, in 1899, a bigger railroad called the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad was built right through Hub.
Hub was once a busy place with two sawmills. Sawmills are places where logs are cut into lumber. In 1900, about 25 people lived in Hub.
Natural Resources in Hub
In 1945, a company called Humble Oil made an important discovery. They found what is now known as the Hub Field. This field turned out to be very rich in natural resources.
Over time, the Hub Field produced a huge amount of natural gas. It also produced millions of barrels of oil. Other companies, like the California Oil Company and the Pan American Petroleum Corporation, also operated wells in the Hub Field.
