Hubert van Innis (born February 24, 1866 – died November 25, 1961) was an amazing Belgian archer. He is famous for winning many medals at the Summer Olympics. He competed in two Olympic Games, 20 years apart! In total, he won six gold medals and three silver medals. This makes him one of the most successful Olympic archers ever.

Early Life and Archery Passion

Hubert van Innis was born in a small town called Elewijt. When he was a young boy, people say he had to work as a milk delivery boy. He would deliver milk to villages near Brussels. But after his deliveries, he had a special routine. He would send his dog and cart home by themselves! Then, he would go off to practice his archery skills. This shows how dedicated he was to his sport, even from a young age.

First Big Wins

Hubert started winning competitions very early. When he was just 13 years old, he won first prize in a major archery contest in Antwerp. He continued to win this prize in 1893, 1894, 1895, and 1896. In 1881, he also won a special "royal prize" in Roozendaal. These early victories showed everyone that he was a rising star in archery.

Olympic Achievements

Hubert van Innis is best known for his incredible success at the Olympic Games. He competed in two different Olympics. What makes this even more amazing is that these two Games were 20 years apart!

1900 Paris Olympics

Hubert was 34 years old when he went to the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. He entered four different archery events.

  • He won gold medals in two events: the Au Cordon Doré 33 metres and the Au Chapelet 33 metres.
  • He also won a silver medal in the Au Cordon Doré 50 metres. He finished second to a French archer named Henri Hérouin.
  • His lowest finish was fourth place in the Au Chapelet 50 metres.

1920 Antwerp Olympics

Hubert had to wait 20 years for his next Olympic chance. He competed at the 1920 Summer Olympics in his home country, Antwerp, Belgium. Here, he added even more medals to his collection!

  • He won two more individual gold medals in the Individual moving bird, 28 metres and the Individual moving bird, 33 metres events.
