Hubertus Cornelis Antonius Ernst (born April 8, 1917 – died May 19, 2017) was an important Dutch leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He lived to be 100 years old. At the time of his death in 2017, he was the oldest Dutch Roman Catholic bishop.
The Life of Bishop Ernst
Hubertus Ernst studied to become a priest at a special school called a seminary in the Diocese of Breda. He became a priest on June 7, 1941. Later, he taught about what is right and wrong according to the Church's teachings. This subject is called moral theology.
On November 3, 1967, Ernst was chosen to be the bishop of the Diocese of Breda. This happened after the previous bishop, Gerardus Henricus De Vet, passed away suddenly. A high-ranking Church leader named Cardinal Bernard Alfrink officially made him a bishop on December 17 of the same year.
Bishop Ernst led the Diocese of Breda until he retired on May 6, 1992. Even after retiring, he continued to manage the Diocese for about two and a half more years as an Apostolic Administrator. This meant he was still in charge temporarily. In 1994, he helped make his successor, Martinus Petrus Maria Muskens, a bishop. He also helped make the current bishop, Hans van den Hende, a bishop in 2007. Bishop Ernst turned 100 years old in April 2017 and passed away one month later.
Working for Peace: Pax Christi
In 1976, a Dutch Catholic group called Pax Christi asked Bishop Ernst to become its president. Pax Christi is an organization that works for peace. Bishop Ernst, who had taught moral theology, strongly believed in peace. He was especially against nuclear weapons, a belief known as nuclear pacifism.
Even after he retired as a bishop and finished his time as president of Pax Christi, he continued to speak out. He strongly disagreed with President George W. Bush's "War on Terror." Bishop Ernst believed that such actions went against the Catholic Church's teachings on peace. He often referred to a document from Pope John XXIII called Pacem in terris, which talks about peace on Earth.
