Hubig's Pies are a famous brand of tasty, sweet, and fruit-filled fried pies. They are made by the Simon Hubig Pie Company in New Orleans, Louisiana. These popular pies were not available for a while after a big fire destroyed their factory in 2012. But don't worry, the company brought them back in 2022!

The Story of Hubig's Pies
Hubig's Pies started with a man named Simon Hubig. He was born in Spain's Basque Country. After serving in World War I, he moved to the United States. Simon learned how to bake from his mother, who owned a bakery.
In 1922, he opened the Simon Hubig Pie Company in Fort Worth, Texas. Soon, his company grew to have nine locations across the Southeastern United States. One of these new bakeries opened in New Orleans in 1922.
Surviving Tough Times
During the Great Depression, many businesses struggled. All of Hubig's bakeries had to close, except for the one in New Orleans. This bakery kept making money and stayed open. It remained in the same spot on Dauphine Street in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood for many years.
How Hubig's Pies Were Made
The way Hubig's Pies were made didn't change much over time. Before Hurricane Katrina, the company made their famous turnover-style pies. They also made individual and family-sized pies.
The Hubig's bakery often gave fresh pies to charities in the area. The Orleans Parish jail was one of their biggest customers. The bakery mostly relied on people to make the pies by hand, not machines.

Savory Simon is the fun mascot for Hubig's Pies. You could often see him on the pie packages and in their advertisements.
After Hurricane Katrina
When Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in August 2005, the bakery was damaged. The ventilation system, an outside wall, and the roof were all hurt. Because of this, Hubig's stopped making pies for a while.
Production started again on January 4, 2006. This was after the neighborhood had clean water, electricity, and gas. After the storm, the pies cost a little more, and the types of flavors they offered changed. The company made about 30,000 hand-sized pies each day for delivery.
Fire and Rebuilding Efforts
On July 27, 2012, a big fire broke out at the bakery. Flames were seen early in the morning. The fire grew very large, and the factory was completely destroyed. Luckily, no one was hurt.
Andrew Ramsey, one of the owners, first said they planned to rebuild quickly. In 2013, the city approved plans for a new factory. However, the rebuilding efforts stopped before any construction began. In 2014, Ramsey explained that the owners couldn't agree on how to move forward. He said he wanted to reopen, but he didn't have control over it.
In April 2015, the city approved plans to build homes on the old factory site.
The Return of Hubig's Pies
Fans of Hubig's Pies waited a long time for them to come back. On July 18, 2019, it was announced that pie production would start again in 2020 from a new factory in Jefferson Parish.
In November 2022, the company announced they were hiring new workers. This was a sign that the pies were finally coming back! Later that month, Hubig's Pies officially returned to stores, much to the delight of many people.
