The Casa-Museo Federico García Lorca, also known as Huerta de San Vicente, was the summer home of the García Lorca family. They lived there from 1926 to 1936.
Today, this house and its gardens are a special museum. It is located in the heart of Granada's Park Federico García Lorca in Spain. The park opened in 1995.
History of the House
The house was built in the late 1800s. It was first called "Huerta de los Mudos." Federico García Rodríguez, who was the father of the famous writer Federico García Lorca, bought the house on May 27, 1925.
He changed its name to "Huerta de Vicente." This was a way to honor his wife, Vicenta Lorca Romero. The house still looks much like it did back then.
Federico García Lorca wrote some of his most famous plays here. These include Blood wedding, which he wrote in 1932, and Yerma, written in 1934.
He was at the Huerta de San Vicente just before he was arrested. He then went to stay at his friend Luis Rosales's home for safety.
The García Lorca family had to leave Spain in 1941. This was because of the government at that time, led by Francisco Franco. They moved to the United States but still owned their home.
The Museum Today
On April 6, 1985, Isabel García Lorca gave the house to the city of Granada. She wanted it to become a museum for the poet.
The art center opened its doors on May 10, 1995. It now helps people learn about Federico García Lorca's life and work.
