Who Was Hugh de Ross?
Hugh de Ross was the oldest son of William II, Earl of Ross, and his wife, Euphemia de Berkeley.
Hugh was a favorite of King Robert I, also known as Robert the Bruce. King Robert gave Hugh many lands. In 1308, Hugh married King Robert's sister, Matilda Bruce, in the Orkney Isles. Hugh's younger brother, John, married Margaret Comyn, who was an important heiress. However, John did not have any children.
Hugh's Family Life
Hugh de Ross was married two times.
His first wife was Matilda (Maud) de Brus. She was the sister of King Robert I "the Bruce." They married in 1308. Hugh and Matilda had several children:
- William de Ross III: He was their oldest son and became the next Earl of Ross in 1336.
- Marjory de Ross: She married Malise, 8th Earl of Strathearn, who was another important Scottish Earl.
- John de Ross: He died in 1364 and did not have any children.
Hugh's second wife was Margaret de Graham. She was the daughter of Sir John de Graham. They married in 1329. Hugh and Margaret had two known children:
- Hugh de Ross of Rarichies: He was named as a possible heir to the Earldom of Ross in 1350. He was also held as a hostage to help King David II return from England in 1351.
- Euphemia de Ross: She married two important Scottish nobles. Her first husband was John Randolph, 3rd Earl of Moray. Her second husband was Robert Stewart, who later became King Robert II of Scotland.
Hugh's children married into very important families, including other Earls and even a future King of Scotland.
His Final Battle
Hugh de Ross was killed along with many other Scottish nobles at the Battle of Halidon Hill on July 19, 1333. After his death, his son, William, became the next Earl of Ross.
