Captain Hugh Abercrombie Anderson MBE (born February 10, 1890 – died November 9, 1965) was a talented writer from Newfoundland. He was also a military officer and worked in the theater business. He was recognized for his contributions and became a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

Who Was Hugh Anderson?
Hugh Abercrombie Anderson was born in St. John's, which was then part of the Newfoundland Colony. His father, John Anderson, was a well-known politician. Hugh grew up in a family that valued education and public service.
Early Life and Education
Hugh Anderson attended two important schools. First, he studied at Bishop Feild College in Newfoundland. Later, he went to the Edinburgh Academy in Scotland. These schools helped him prepare for his future career. After finishing his education, he started working in his family's business in St. John's.
A Career in the Military
After working in the family business for a few years, Hugh Anderson decided to join the military. He served his country and showed great leadership skills. He rose through the ranks and became a Captain. This was an important achievement in his life.
Working in Theater
In 1921, Captain Anderson moved to New York City. There, he became the manager of a theatrical business. This business was owned by his brother, John Murray Anderson, who was a famous director and producer. Hugh helped manage the shows and performances. This was a very different kind of work from being a military officer!
His Writings
Hugh Anderson was also a writer. He used a special pen name, or a different name, for some of his creative work. His pen name was Hugh Abercrombie. Under this name, he wrote a musical called Auld Lang Syne.
He also helped write another musical called Babylonia. For this musical, he co-authored the libretto. A libretto is the text or story of a musical or opera. He worked with Lola Carrier Worrell on this project.
Recognition and Later Life
For his contributions, Hugh Anderson was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This is a special award given by the British government to people who have done great things. He lived in Queens, New York, for many years. Captain Hugh Abercrombie Anderson passed away at his home in Queens on November 9, 1965.
