His Family and Early Life

Hugh Boscawen was born on March 20, 1707. His father was Hugh Boscawen, the 1st Viscount Falmouth. His mother was Charlotte Godfrey. Charlotte's grandmother, Arabella Churchill, was the sister of the famous Duke of Marlborough. Hugh also had a younger brother, Edward, who became a well-known admiral in the British Navy.

A Life in Politics and the Military

Hugh Boscawen started his career in politics. In 1727, he was elected to Parliament for the area of Truro. He served as a Member of Parliament until 1734. That year, his father passed away, and Hugh inherited his father's title, becoming the 2nd Viscount Falmouth.

In 1747, he was given an important role as the Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. This was a high-ranking position in the royal household, and he held it for 35 years until his death. In 1756, he became a member of the Privy Council, a group of advisors to the King.

His Personal Life

In 1736, Lord Falmouth married Hannah Catherine Maria Smith. She was the daughter of Thomas Smith and had been married before. Hugh and Hannah did not have any children together.

However, Lord Falmouth was a loving and devoted father to three children whom he adopted: Hugh, Jane, and Florentius. They were born in the 1750s. He was very proud of them and wanted them to have a good life.

In his will, dated 1778, Lord Falmouth clearly stated that he had adopted Hugh, Jane, and Florentius as his children. He wanted them to use his family name and coat of arms. He also left them a large sum of money, showing his generosity and care for their future. He asked his wife and friends to support his children. Hugh, his adopted son, later became a Knight Marshall and had four children of his own.

Lord Falmouth passed away in February 1782, at the age of 74. His nephew, George, inherited his title.
