Hugh Fraser, 7th Lord Lovat (born 1591, died 1645) was an important Scottish landowner. He was a nobleman, meaning he came from a powerful family.
Hugh Fraser was the son of Simon Fraser, 6th Lord Lovat and Katherine Mackenzie. His mother's father was Colin Mackenzie of Kintail.
Before he became Lord Lovat in 1633, people called him the "Master of Lovat." He studied at the University of St Andrews, a famous university in Scotland.
The Hidden Treasure of Lovat Castle
In the autumn of 1634, something exciting happened at Lovat. A man was working in the castle's orchard, cutting branches. He found an old pot made of clay.
Inside the pot was a surprising treasure! It was full of gold coins and rings. These items seemed to be from the 1500s. People believed this treasure was brought to Lovat by Elizabeth Stewart. She was the wife of Hugh Fraser, 5th Lord Lovat. It was thought that her maid had stolen and hidden the treasure.
Hugh Fraser passed away at Lovat on December 17, 1645.
Family Life and Children
Hugh Fraser married Isobel Wemyss (born 1588, died 1636) in 1614. Their wedding took place in Wemyss. They had several children, including:
- Mary Fraser, who married David Ross of Balnagown in 1634.
- Anne Fraser, who married John Gordon, 14th Earl of Sutherland.
- Simon Fraser, who was known as the Master of Lovat (1621-1639).
- Catherine Fraser, who married Sir John Sinclair of Dunbeath. Later, on June 30, 1653, she married Robert Arbuthnot, 1st Viscount of Arbuthnott.
- Hugh Fraser, also known as the Master of Lovat. He married Anne Leslie in 1642 at Holyrood House. Anne was the daughter of Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven. This Hugh Fraser later became the father of the 8th Lord Lovat.
