Who Was Robert Arbuthnot?
Robert Arbuthnot was born before 1625 and passed away on October 10, 1655. He was a Scottish Peer, which means he was a member of the nobility. He also served as a Scottish Privy Counsellor starting in 1649. A Privy Counsellor was a special advisor to the King or Queen.
He was the son of Sir Robert Arbuthnott, who was the 17th head of the Arbuthnott family. His mother was Margaret, the daughter of Simon Fraser, 6th Lord Lovat.
His Family Life
Robert Arbuthnot was married twice. His first wife was Marjory Carnegie. She was the daughter of David Carnegie, 1st Earl of Southesk. They were married sometime before 1639.
Together, Robert and Marjory had two children:
- Hon. Margaret Arbuthnot (born before 1644)
- Sir Robert Arbuthnot, 2nd Viscount of Arbuthnott (born before 1648, died June 16, 1682)
Later, on June 30, 1653, Robert married his second wife, Katherine Fraser. She was his first cousin and the daughter of Hugh Fraser, 7th Lord Lovat. They also had children together.
His Important Roles
King Charles I knighted Robert Arbuthnot. This was a special honor given for his strong loyalty to the King.
In 1641, he also served as a Ruling Elder in the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. This meant he was an important leader within the church.
Becoming a Viscount
On November 16, 1641, King Charles I gave Robert Arbuthnot a very important title. He was made the 1st Viscount of Arbuthnott, in County Kincardine. He also became the 1st Lord Inverbervie, Kincardineshire.
The King gave him these titles to encourage him to support the Royalist cause. This was during a time when there were many political disagreements in Scotland.
