A Long Family History
The Arbuthnott family has a very long and interesting history. For over 800 years, the male line of the family has lived in the same place. This is a very rare and special record!
Around the year 1188, a Scottish king named William the Lion gave the lands of Arbuthnott to an ancestor named Hugh de Swinton. The family's main home and the clan's headquarters are still on these lands today.
Understanding Scottish Viscount Titles
In Scotland, most Viscount titles traditionally include the word "of" in them, like "Viscount of Arbuthnott." This is different from English Viscount titles, which are usually just "Viscount X."
However, over time, many Scottish Viscounts started using the English style. Today, only the Viscount of Arbuthnott and, sometimes, the Viscount of Oxfuird, still use the "of" in their title.
Arbuthnott House: The Family Home
The main home of the Arbuthnott family is called Arbuthnott House. It is located in a place called Arbuthnott, which is near Inverbervie in Kincardineshire, Scotland. This house has been the family's home for many centuries.
