The Viscount of Arbuthnott is an important title in the Peerage of Scotland. A "peerage" is a system of noble titles, like Duke, Earl, or Viscount. This special title was created in 1641 by King Charles I.

Along with the Viscount title, the person also became Lord Inverbervie. The Viscount of Arbuthnott is also the traditional chief of Clan Arbuthnott. This means they are the head of the Arbuthnott family and clan.

A Long Family History

The Arbuthnott family has a very long and interesting history. For over 800 years, the male line of the family has lived in the same place. This is a very rare and special record!

Around the year 1188, a Scottish king named William the Lion gave the lands of Arbuthnott to an ancestor named Hugh de Swinton. The family's main home and the clan's headquarters are still on these lands today.

Understanding Scottish Viscount Titles

In Scotland, most Viscount titles traditionally include the word "of" in them, like "Viscount of Arbuthnott." This is different from English Viscount titles, which are usually just "Viscount X."

However, over time, many Scottish Viscounts started using the English style. Today, only the Viscount of Arbuthnott and, sometimes, the Viscount of Oxfuird, still use the "of" in their title.

Arbuthnott House: The Family Home

The main home of the Arbuthnott family is called Arbuthnott House. It is located in a place called Arbuthnott, which is near Inverbervie in Kincardineshire, Scotland. This house has been the family's home for many centuries.

The Viscounts of Arbuthnott (Since 1641)

Here is a list of the people who have held the title of Viscount of Arbuthnott since it was created:

The person who is expected to inherit the title next is called the heir apparent. For the current Viscount, this is his only son, the Honourable Christopher Keith Arbuthnott. He is also known as the Master of Arbuthnott (born 1977).

The next in line after Christopher is his only son, Alexander Nicholas Keith Arbuthnott (born 2007).

The Arbuthnott Coat of Arms

A coat of arms is a special design that represents a family, a person, or an organization. The Arbuthnott family has its own unique coat of arms. It includes symbols like a peacock's head and two wyverns, which are mythical dragon-like creatures. The family motto, Laus Deo, means "Praise to God."
