John Arbuthnott, 9th Viscount of Arbuthnott (born 4 June 1806 – died 26 May 1891) was an important Scottish nobleman and a soldier. He held the title of Viscount, which is a rank of nobility in the United Kingdom. He also served as a Deputy Lieutenant and a Justice of the Peace, helping with local government and law.

Early Life and Education

John Arbuthnott was born at Arbuthnott House, a historic family home in Scotland. He was the oldest son of John Arbuthnott, 8th Viscount of Arbuthnott and his mother, Margaret. His mother was the daughter of Walter Ogilvy, who was the de jure 8th Earl of Airlie.

In 1860, John Arbuthnott became the Viscount after his father passed away. He went to Corpus Christi College, Oxford for his education, starting there in 1824.

Military Career

John Arbuthnott had a career in the military. In 1825, he joined the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons, a cavalry regiment, as a Cornet. This was his first officer rank.

He continued to move up in the army:

  • In 1826, he became a Lieutenant.
  • In 1830, he was promoted to Captain.
  • He retired from the army as a Major in 1850.

Public Service and Family Life

Besides his military service, John Arbuthnott also served as a Deputy Lieutenant for Kincardineshire. A Deputy Lieutenant helps the main representative of the King or Queen in a county.

On 5 June 1837, he married his cousin, Lady Jean Graham Drummond Ogilvy. She was born in Midlothian on 27 February 1818. They were married at Cortachy Castle in Angus.

John Arbuthnott passed away at his home on 26 May 1891. His son, John, then became the 10th Viscount. Lady Arbuthnott lived until 4 March 1902, passing away at Arbuthnott House in Fordoun, Kincardineshire.
