Hugh Hughes was an important Welsh politician who lived a long time ago, in the 1500s. He was known for his work in law and government in Wales, especially in an area called Anglesey.

Who Was Hugh Hughes?

Hugh Hughes was born into a family in Porthamel, Anglesey, Wales. He was the oldest son of David Lloyd ap Hugh. Hugh was the first person in his family to use "Hughes" as a last name.

He went to Cambridge University in 1564 to study. Later, he studied law at a special school called Lincoln's Inn in 1571. By 1580, he became a lawyer, which is called being "called to the bar".

In 1574, Hugh took over his father's estate, which was a large piece of land with a house. He built a new house there in 1569, which he named Plas Coch.

His Important Jobs

Hugh Hughes held many important jobs in government and law.

  • By 1577, he became a Justice of the Peace for Anglesey. This meant he helped keep order and dealt with minor legal issues in the area.
  • He also became a Justice of the Peace for Caernarvonshire and Merioneth by 1591.
  • He was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Anglesey three times: from 1580 to 1581, from 1591 to 1592, and again from 1599 to 1600. The High Sheriff was a very important official who helped enforce laws in the county.

At Lincoln's Inn, where he studied law, he held important positions too:

  • He was a "bencher" in 1594, which is a senior member of the legal society.
  • He was an "Autumn reader" in 1595, meaning he gave important lectures on law.
  • He was the "treasurer" from 1602 to 1603, managing the school's money.

Hugh also worked as a lawyer for the Queen.

  • In 1589 and 1592, he was a "deputy Queen's attorney" for Anglesey, Caernarvonshire, and Merioneth. This meant he represented the Queen in legal matters in those areas.
  • By 1596, he was an attorney for many areas, including Anglesey, Caernarvon, Cheshire, Flintshire, and Merioneth.
  • He was also a member of the Council of the Marches of Wales in 1601. This council was a special group that helped govern Wales and the border areas with England.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1597, Hugh Hughes was elected as a Member (MP) for Anglesey. This meant he represented the people of Anglesey in the Parliament of England. Being an MP was a very important role, as he helped make laws for the country.

His Family

Hugh Hughes married a woman named Elizabeth Montagu. She was the daughter of Simon Montagu from Northamptonshire. Together, they had one son, Roger, who would inherit his father's estate. They also had three daughters.

When Did He Die?

Hugh Hughes passed away in 1609.
