Hugh II was a powerful leader who lived a long time ago, from about 920 AD until before 992 AD. He was known as the Count of Maine, which was a very important title in France during the Middle Ages. His father was Hugh I, Count of Maine, and his mother's name is not known.

Just like his father, Hugh II was a "vassal" to his uncle, Hugh the Great. This means he promised loyalty and military support to his uncle, who was a more powerful lord. In return, Hugh the Great protected Hugh II and his lands.

Political Alliances

After his uncle, Hugh the Great, passed away, Hugh II formed new friendships with other powerful leaders. He became allies with Fulk II the Good, who was the Count of Anjou. He also allied with Theobald the Trickster, who was the Count of Blois. These alliances helped him keep his power and protect his lands.

Later, Hugh II joined forces with Theobald's son, Odo. They went against Seinfroy, who was the Bishop of Le Mans. However, Hugh and Odo had to escape and find safety with Bouchard I, the Count of Vendôme. They found refuge in an area known as the Bas-Vendômois.

Military Actions

Hugh II was also a warrior. In the year 939, he fought in an important battle. He joined forces with Alan II, Duke of Brittany and Judicael Berengar. Together, they fought against the Vikings at the Battle of Trans-la-Forêt. This battle was a significant event in protecting the region from Viking raids.

Family and Successor

Hugh II had children with his wife, whose name is not known today. His children were:

  • Hugh III, Count of Maine
  • Fulk of Maine (who lived until after 992)
  • Herbert “Baco” of Maine (who lived until after 1046)

Herbert "Baco" later became a "regent" for his nephew, Hugh IV, Count of Maine. A regent is someone who rules in place of a king or count when they are too young or unable to rule themselves. After Hugh II passed away, his son, Hugh III, became the new Count of Maine.
