Hugh III was an important ruler in a place called Arborea, which is now part of Sardinia, Italy. He became the leader, known as the "Judge" or "King" of Arborea, in 1376. His father was Marianus IV of Arborea, who was also a powerful ruler. Hugh III continued many of his father's good ideas. People said he was a wise leader who made fair laws. He also held the title of Count of Goceano.
Hugh III's Family Life
Hugh III got married in 1363 to a woman from the Da Vico family. Sadly, she passed away in 1369. They had one daughter together, named Benedetta. In 1373, a powerful prince named Louis I, Duke of Anjou wanted to marry Benedetta. He was the son of King Charles V of France, but the marriage did not happen.
Fighting for Arborea
Hugh III was a brave leader who fought to protect his land. He joined his father in a big military fight in 1365. They were fighting against a general from Catalonia named Pere de Luna. Hugh helped lead one of the groups of soldiers. They used a clever plan to surround the enemy near Oristano.
When Hugh became the Judge of Arborea, he kept fighting. He did not want the people from Aragon and Catalonia to take over his land. He worked hard to keep Arborea independent.
A Sudden End
Hugh III made some people unhappy, especially some of the nobles. These nobles tried to get the common people to rebel against him. On March 3, 1383, a big uprising happened in Oristano. During this revolt, Hugh and his daughter Benedetta, who was supposed to rule after him, both died.
After Hugh's death, his nephew Frederick of Arborea became the next ruler. Frederick was very young, so Hugh's sister, Eleanor of Arborea, ruled as a regent for him. Eleanor was able to calm the rebels and bring peace back to Arborea. She also helped to bring back the fair laws that Hugh and his father had worked so hard to create.
